Located in the northerly coastal town Wick, the unique combination of brisk sea air and carefully curated cask selection has led to the distillery's whisky being named the "Maritime Malt".

The new expression features a selection of casks that have "breathed the sea air of the Caithness coast" for a quarter of a century.

Matured in second fill American oak, ex-bourbon casks and first-fill Spanish oak butts, which previously held Oloroso wine, Old Pulteney 25-Years-Old is described as "mature and fragrant", with heavy spices and a hint of dark chocolate.

While on the palate, the distillery team say it has creamy vanilla notes and hints of toffee mix with bitter chocolate, leading to a "long and spicy finish".

The packaging features a debossed diamond pattern which is inspired by the fishing nets that helped Wick establish itself as the herring fishing capital of Europe centuries ago.

A spokesperson for the brand said: "Just like the sea which has shaped its heritage, distillery and whisky, Old Pulteney is ever changing and constantly innovating.

"Recent months have seen the entire range of malts - which includes 12 Years Old, the non-age statement Huddart, 15 Years Old and 18 Years Old - reinvigorated with a distinctive new look, featuring fresh packaging."

This latest core expression will retail at around £400 and will be available to buy at specialist retailers throughout the UK as well as at the Old Pulteney Distillery.

Malcolm Waring, distillery manager at Old Pulteney said: “For 25 long years, this special whisky has been sheltered from a fast-changing world, storms and high tides at our distillery here in Wick.

"It’s a whisky we’re incredibly proud of, distilled and matured by the sea.
